NEW YORK — The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) has appointed Michael A. Fernandez as Chair of the newly established Special Committee on Foreign Attorneys. The goal of the Special Committee will be to provide a space within the HNBA for foreign-trained JDs and LLMs to share experiences, resources, goals, and career advancement strategies.

The Special Committee will oversee initiatives, programs, and networking opportunities to help educate and prepare foreign-trained attorneys regarding U.S. Law school curriculum and U.S. employment and careers, identifying ways to collaborate with U.S. Law schools, and making recommendations on how the HNBA can provide education and resources related to career options, education management, and development skills training for foreign-trained lawyers.

HNBA President Mariana Bravo who appointed Michael as Chair of the new committee said, “The HNBA strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space for all. I am thrilled that Michael will Chair this Special Committee. He has taught and mentored many foreign attorneys who have sought out opportunities in the US market. He has worked to make the HNBA an inclusive space for foreign attorneys. Michael’s experience and leadership in this new role will help the HNBA better serve the foreign-trained lawyers who wish to integrate into the U.S. legal community.”

Michael’s practice is focused on complex commercial litigation, international arbitration, and regulatory compliance issues. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, he has experience representing foreign and domestic companies and individuals involved in arbitrations, litigations, and with investigations in the U.S., as well as parties to international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations conducted under the major international rules including UNCITRAL, ICSID, ICC, and ICDR.
